Working as a Delivery Rider on a Platform: What to Expect

Before you sign up as a delivery rider, understand what the work involves: accepting orders, collecting from shops, handling cash and following the rules.

Delivery riders are the link between a local shop and a customer. If you have a bike or a vehicle and know your city, rider work may suit you. This guide explains in general what platform delivery involves so you can decide whether it is for you. It does not promise any level of earnings, which depend on how much you work, the orders in your area and the platform's rules.

What a rider does

  1. Receives an order offer and decides whether to accept it.
  2. Goes to the shop and collects the parcel, checking that it is the right item and properly packed.
  3. Delivers it to the customer's address, with the customer's phone number to coordinate.
  4. Collects the payment on delivery when the order is cash on delivery.
  5. Records the result, for example delivered or not delivered, with the details the platform asks for.

What you need

  • A reliable bike or vehicle and a smartphone with mobile data.
  • Good knowledge of the areas you serve.
  • Valid identification. Platforms such as Shipify check identity before a rider starts.
  • Honesty and care with other people's goods and money.

Money and responsibility

A rider who handles cash carries responsibility for it. Platforms may ask riders to keep money in a wallet or deposit so that goods and cash are covered, and the rules differ from platform to platform. Read them carefully before you accept an order and make sure you understand what you owe and when.

Independent partner, not an employee

Riders on platforms like Shipify are independent delivery partners who choose which orders to accept. That gives flexibility, and it also means you manage your own costs such as fuel and bike maintenance. The Terms of the platform explain the relationship.

Good habits that matter

  • Call the customer before you arrive.
  • Be polite at the door and give a clear receipt of what was delivered.
  • Handle parcels carefully.
  • Report problems honestly, such as a wrong address or a customer who refuses.
  • Follow traffic rules and keep yourself safe.

Before you sign up

Read the rider agreement and the Terms in full. If a part is unclear, ask the support team before you start. When you are ready, you can sign up as a rider and complete the identity steps.
