If you own a shop, you already have the hardest part of online selling: real products and real stock. What you may not have is a website, a courier contract and time to chat with customers all day. Selling through online sellers, who find the customers while you supply the product, is one way to reach more buyers without building any of that yourself. This guide explains how it works for a shop and how to prepare.
How selling through online sellers works
On a platform like Shipify, a verified shop lists its products with its own photos and prices. Online sellers choose products from the listings, set their own selling price and bring their own customers. When an order is placed, you get it ready, and a Shipify rider collects it from your shop and delivers it to the customer. You are paid your listed price for each delivered order.
You do not set the online seller's price, talk to the end customer or arrange delivery. Your job is to keep your listings accurate and to have every order ready when the rider arrives. For the other side of the same process, see how dropshipping works in Pakistan.
What to prepare before you list
- A real shop with an address you can show, because platforms verify shops before products go live.
- Clear photos of your own products, taken in good light and showing the real item.
- Honest descriptions with size, colour, material and what is in the box.
- A price that you can keep for the products listed, including the cost of packing.
- An accurate stock count and a routine for updating it.
Writing a listing that sells
Online sellers choose products they can describe honestly and trust to arrive as described. A good listing gives them exactly that. Use a plain title that names the product, a short description that covers the details a buyer asks about, and photos from more than one angle. Do not put phone numbers, links or social media handles in listings: platforms block them so that orders stay on the platform.
Getting orders ready
- Check stock when an order arrives and confirm quickly if you cannot supply it.
- Pack the item securely. Fragile and liquid items need extra care.
- Mark the order ready as soon as it is.
- Show the item to the rider and pack it in front of them. Riders are not allowed to take a parcel that was packed beforehand; this protects everyone from illegal or prohibited goods being sent through the platform.
- Do not ask the rider for payment at pickup.
How and when you are paid
You earn your listed price for every order that is delivered, and nothing for an order that is cancelled or not delivered. After delivery there is a short return window, and money becomes ready for payout once it has passed and no return is open. The exact rules, the window and the payout schedule are in the app and in the Terms; read them so that you know when to expect money.
Handling returns and complaints
If an order fails or the customer returns the product, the item comes back to you. Check its condition honestly and confirm receipt in the app. If a complaint says the product was faulty or incomplete, answer with the facts. The best protection is to pack well and describe accurately, which prevents most complaints. The Return and Refund Policy explains who pays in each case.
Common mistakes shops make
- Leaving sold-out products listed, which leads to cancelled orders and unhappy sellers.
- Using photos that do not match the item sent.
- Changing prices without updating listings.
- Packing carelessly, so that goods are damaged on the way.
- Being slow to mark orders ready, which delays delivery for the customer.
Online sellers choose shops that are dependable, which is described in how to choose a reliable supplier. If you are ready to start, you can list your shop, or contact the team with questions first.
