Part of the complete guide: The Complete Guide to Cash-on-Delivery Selling in Pakistan

A return policy answers a question every customer silently asks: what if it does not work out? A clear, fair answer makes buyers more willing to order and gives you something solid to point to when there is a disagreement. It does not have to be long.

Decide the main points

  • Which products can be returned or exchanged, and which cannot, for example hygiene items or custom orders.
  • How many days the customer has after delivery.
  • The condition the item must be in, such as unused and in its original packaging.
  • Whether the customer gets a replacement, an exchange or a refund.
  • Who pays for the return delivery in each case: a seller mistake or a change of mind.

Be fair and realistic

Think about the costs. A policy so generous that you lose money on every return is not sustainable. A policy so strict that it frightens buyers off costs you orders. Aim for the middle and apply it consistently.

Say what counts as a seller mistake

Wrong item, missing part, damaged on arrival and clearly different from the listing are usually the seller's responsibility. Changing your mind or choosing the wrong size is usually the customer's. Spelling this out avoids arguments.

Write it in plain language

Use short sentences and the language your customers read. Put the most important rule first. Avoid legal-sounding phrases that nobody understands.

Show it before the sale

Put a short version in your listings or your page and send the full text on request. Customers should not discover your rules only after a problem.

Follow the rules of the platform you use

If you sell through a platform, its policy also applies to your orders and may override yours. On Shipify, see the Return and Refund Policy for how returns, exchanges and charges work.

Know the law

Consumer protection rules may apply to your sales. This guide does not give legal advice; ask a qualified adviser about your obligations.

Keep to your word

A policy is only useful if you follow it. Handle each return the same way and record the outcome.
