How to Package Orders So They Arrive Safely

A parcel is handled several times on its way: packed, carried, put on a bike, handed over. A damaged item usually means a complaint, a return and a lost sale. Good packaging is cheap compared with that.

Match the packaging to the product

• Clothes and soft goods: a clean plastic bag inside a strong outer bag or box.
• Hard or breakable items: a box with padding on every side so the item cannot move.
• Liquids: a sealed lid, a plastic bag around the container and a box.
• Small items: a small box or padded envelope so they do not get lost.

Protect fragile items

Wrap the item in paper, cloth or bubble wrap. Fill gaps in the box so nothing shifts when it is shaken. Shake the finished box lightly: if you hear movement, add more padding.

Keep it dry and clean

Seal items in plastic against rain and dust. Use new or clean outer packaging. A dirty parcel suggests a careless seller.

Seal and strengthen

Use proper tape on every edge. Make sure the parcel is not so large that it is awkward to carry. Do not overfill a bag so it splits.

Label clearly

• Put the order number where the rider or courier can see it.
• Do not write private information in large letters on the outside.

Check before you close

1. Is it the right item, size and colour?
2. Is it clean and undamaged?
3. Are all parts and accessories inside?
4. Is the packing tight and the parcel sealed?

A small touch that helps

A short note or card with the shop name gives the customer something to remember. Keep it simple and honest.
