How to Write Product Descriptions That Sell Without Over-Promising

A good product description answers the buyer's questions and sets honest expectations. Learn a simple structure that raises trust and lowers returns.

A product description has two jobs. It must make the buyer want the product, and it must make sure the buyer knows what they will receive. The second job matters just as much as the first, because a customer who feels misled returns the item or refuses the parcel. Good descriptions are specific, honest and easy to scan.

Start with what the buyer wants to know

Before you write, imagine the questions a customer would ask if they were standing in front of the item. What is it made of? How big is it? What colours exist? What is included? How do I use or wash it? Answer those questions directly.

A simple structure

  1. A clear title that says what the product is, with the main detail such as size or type.
  2. One or two sentences on what it is for and who it suits.
  3. A short list of key details: material, size, colour options, weight if relevant.
  4. What is in the box.
  5. Care or usage notes if they matter.
  6. Delivery and return notes in plain words.

Use plain language

Write the way you would explain the product to a friend. Avoid long strings of adjectives. Words such as best, amazing or number one say nothing a buyer can check. Concrete facts persuade more than slogans.

Be honest about limits

If the colour may look slightly different on a screen, say so. If a size runs small, say so. Mentioning a limit costs you a few sales but saves you many refusals, and it makes the rest of your description more believable.

Avoid claims you cannot support

  • Do not promise results, such as health or weight outcomes, that you cannot prove.
  • Do not use another brand's name or logo unless the product is genuinely theirs.
  • Do not describe an item as original or imported unless you know it is.

Selling platforms and advertising networks also have their own rules about misleading claims. Read the rules of any platform you use.

Keep contact details out of listings

On a marketplace platform, product text is public to other users. Do not put phone numbers, links or social media handles inside a description. On Shipify, listing text that contains contact details is blocked so that business stays on the platform.

Match the words to the photos

The words and pictures should tell the same story. Read how to take good product photos with a phone for the picture side. Together they build the trust described in how to build customer trust as an online seller.
